SNOW!

December 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Its SNOWING!

We woke up this morning to a muffled stillness. My body knew what that meant before my mind was awake.  Heart racing like it did when I was little. Missing school and playing outside all day was in my future.

SNOW!

Weaving magic in the most mundane settings.

If I see one more male enhancement video I think I might have a seizure. What is with this country? Why is it ok to advertise about enlarging one’s penis? On the radio just today I heard the phrase “bigger and thicker” referencing the effects of a male enhancement product. Who comes up with this sh*t?

I sometimes entertain conspiracy theories that the Man (and I use this term literally) is behind it.  Is this all to normalize the concept of old men remaining virile? I say these kinds of drugs are the male answer to plastic surgery. Women get raked over the coals for having work done, but it’s ok for men to pop a pill so they can perform like a stallion??? Why do we as women allow this drivel to be on our airwaves and offending every orifice? What is the deal?  Why are these companies not spending their advertising dollars on something more worthwhile? Why is curing dick dilemmas a priority? Why do I have to hear about it?

And another thing! It recently occurred to me, as I drove to drop A off at the metro today and heard the radio hosts joking about when (and how much) they masturbate, that if it were women having the same conversation no one would be laughing. In fact, that kind of talk coming from women is somehow wrong, dirty and bad. Either that or the woman is a whore or the word “naughty” is bandied about in a sly undercover porn star kind of way. WTF. Such a ridiculous bloody double standard.

Why do we keep saying things are ok for men but not for women? What year is it anyway?

So….

November 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Maybe thinking I could blog on this blog regularly was a little ambitious?

I am gonna try again, though.  There is something that makes me feel not as open writing on my other blog…it’s a great blog, and I love it, but it is not my place.

Since beginning my  foray into freelance writing (blog writing that is) I have come to see it as a sort of resume or business card.  There are people who I  work for or work with that follow it, and since the topic is weddings, well, sometimes that just takes the wind right out my sails. Don’t get me wrong, I love weddings, but now that my work is writing about them  (dear god let me write about something else some day) it gets a  little lonely. Having to work so hard to keep networked (through said blog and the 9th circle of hell, twitter)  in hopes that I will get more work and maybe even (be still my heart) write a piece for a publication, things  get to feeling less like me and more like my workface. Work  I enjoy, but work nonetheless.

Then I came across an old friend’s blog, and was  inspired. When we knew each other, she was a big reader and great writer…and still is. Her blog is thoughtful, compelling and totally her. Which made me think.

This blog was started when A and I moved to LA, (and then back again) and reading back over it, it is nice to hear me – even if that me is a mess still trying to figure things out, and no one really was listening, except during our cross country foibles.

So I am taking the link to that other blog off this one, and am going to try and keep things separate.  Not necessarily secret, since what am I doing writing about it on the interwebs then? But maybe a place where I can put things down?

We’ll see. I make no promises.

Boy all alone on the street

Coo-Coo for Coconut

August 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Cake, that is.

A while back I was watching Bobby Flay’s Throwdown, and caught the episode about Coconut cake in which a scrumptious looking slice was served up at the Peninsula Grill in Charleston, SC.  So began my obsession.  Then my little sister announced she was headed to law school in Charleston. Before long, my mom headed down to see her….and came back with a slice of cake for me to try.

After I picked my mom up from the airport, we had lunch (during which I couldn’t stop fixating on the cake in the fridge). It even distracted me from sushi!  Back at her house, she whipped out the dessert and insisted I try it instead of waiting till I  got home to share it with Andrew.

Facing the object of my desire, I cringed just thinking about the calorie content, but that concern faded as I had a bite.

The coconut to cake to icing ratio is perfect.  Not too much or too little of either. The fruit itself  is moist and crisp at the same time.  12 layers of decadent goodness. That sh*t is sick good. If I was able, I would write a haiku about how much I love itMore Coconut Cake

Coconut Cake

If you are in Charleston you must go get some…my mom reports that the Peninsula Grill was kind of stuffy (the cake was $11 a piece!) and not the kind of place she thought she could go just for a slice… maybe just grab it for take out.

You can also attempt to make it yourself or you can order it online. I think Charleston is worth visiting (even if only for the cake),  but do what you will.

Whiskey is yucky.

Willard MojitoSo we went out with some friends last weekend and had some yummy food at Matchbox, where I had my favorite (latest) drink, a side car.

Then we walked down to the Willard to have a fancy pants drink. There I had a Mojito that looked like a snow cone.

Andrew had Whiskey from someplace in Scotland called Isley. In Scotland, apparently, Whiskey is like wine. As in, special grapes from certain areas make a certain wine and then that wine is named for the region?

Anyway I digress.  The Whiskey Andrew had, apparently, is awesome.  When I tasted it it tasted like ashtray water.  Or like campfire after it has been put out. The next morning.

I could smell it on my fingers for the rest of the night.

But I got a cool picture.

Long Time No See!

August 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Well, here I am.  I have been meaning to update for ummm…almost a year now.

sivasanaWhile I am sure no one has been checking to see if we have updated,  I still feel compelled for some unknown reason to being writing again…so I indulge myself! Shocker.

All I can say is what a year it has been. Settling back into life in DC has been no picnic, since as I am sure you gleaned from the posts  from our trip back east from LA we were conflicted about coming back.

While it was the right thing to return, I wont go as far as saying I am GLAD. Nope.

But I think that probably has a lot to do with the fact that by the time we came back, the economy had managed to really hurt my shop. Long story short, I had to close in May. Which  sucked so bad.  I wont go into the gory details of the actual closing…oh no. You can read all about it on my little wedding blog that I write to deal with my still wedding obsessed self.   Of course, that wedding blog may not really be helping said fixation, but nonetheless, it is where I have documented the closing of my store.

After closing, I found myself adrift, and, admittedly depressed.  A couple months of fruitless job searching, and  at last, I  got a job working at Anthropologie! Yahoo! One of my favorite stores.  Simultaneously I was working with one of my past bridal designers to try and wholesale gowns.  Of course, the repping is not easy, since the same economy that forced me to close my bridal shop is affecting those businesses as well…but I forge ahead!

Anyway, I am am finding my way, all the time plotting to go back west. Which is pure insanity, I know.  Sometimes I think we want to go back across just because we enjoy doing it so much!

Who can say.

Anyway, that’s it for now, but I am 100% sure I will be back before the week is out.  Writing this blog has been helpful with getting my thoughts in order, and since I am finally in a place to do that via random thoughts and restaurant reviews, here I go!

I know you are waiting with baited breath.

hm.
